Abilify/ Abilify Discmelt Overview:
Abilify is a medication usually used in the treatment of schizophrenia, a very
debilitating psychological illness that inhibits an individualís ability to
maintain a true sense of reality. The Abilify medication may also be used at
times to treat the bipolar symptoms of mania as well as at times in conjunction
with antidepressants for Major Depressive Disorder.
Abilify is a medication most often used to treat psychotic symptoms including
hallucinations, delusions and disorganized thinking. This antipsychotic
medication is believed to work by changing an individualís sensitivity to brain
chemicals referred to as neurotransmitters: serotonin and dopamine. The Abilify
Discmelt formulation is an orally disintegrating tablet form frequently
prescribed by doctors.

Abilify is an antipsychotic medication usually used to treat schizophrenia in
adults and adolescents 13 to 17 years old. It may sometimes also be used to
treat individuals with bipolar disorder who are experiencing manic and mixed
episodes. Sometimes, it may even be used to treat children as young as 10 years
old. Abilify may also be used at times in conjunction with antidepressants to
treat adults with major depressive disorder. It is not recommended for use with
elderly patients with dementia related psychosis as it may increase the risk of

Before taking this antipsychotic medication, you should always consult a
physician due to the potential serious side effects. Abilify medication can
cause tardive dyskinesia which is a condition indicated by involuntary movements
of the face and body, such as movements of the tongue, puffing of the cheeks,
chewing movements as well as several others noticeable and disconcerting side
effects. Tardive dyskinesia may be permanent and seems to be most common among
older adults, and most frequently among women. You should always consult a
physician about potential risk before using the Abilify medication.
Abilify/ Abilfy Discmelt: When should this medication not be prescribed?
If youíve ever had a bad reaction to this medication or any similar medication,
you should probably avoid it and consult your physician immediately. Also, the
effects of Abilify have not been adequately studied for women who are pregnant.
It should probably only be recommended if its benefits significantly outweigh
the potential risk to the mother or the baby. If you are pregnant or planning to
become pregnant you should talk to your doctor immediately. Breast-feeding is
also not recommended while taking the Abilify medication. As previously
mentioned, Abilify should never be used for elderly patients with dementia
related psychosis due to the high risk of death.
