Depression Medicine: Recommended Elavil Dosage 

What is the recommended Elavil dosage for this depression medicine? 

The usual starting Elavil dosage is 75 mg per day for this depression medicine,  AMITRIPTYLINE elavil depression medicinedivided into two or more smaller doses.  Your doctor may gradually increase the Elavil dosage to 150 mg per day.  The total daily dose for this depression medicine is generally never higher than 200 mg. 

Alternatively, your doctor may also want to start this depression medicine at 50 mg  to 100 mg at bedtime.  He or she may increase this bedtime Elavil dosage by 25 or 50 mg up to a total of 150 mg per day. 

For long-term use, the usual Elavil dosage ranges from 40 to 100 mg taken once daily, usually at bedtime. 

Recommended Elavil dosage for children: 

The use of Elavil is not recommended for children under the age of 12 years old. The usual Elavil dosage for adolescents 12 years of age and over is 10 mg, 3 times a day, with 20 mg taken at bedtime. 

Elavil dosage for older adults: 

The usual dose is 10 mg taken 3 times per day, with 20 mg taken at bedtime.

Elavil Overdosage: 

An overdose of Elavil can be fatal. 

Symptoms of Elavil overdosage may include: 

Abnormally low blood pressure, confusion, convulsions, dilated pupils and other eye problems, disturbed concentration, drowsiness, hallucinations, impaired heart function, rapid or irregular heartbeat, reduced body temperature, stupor, unresponsiveness or coma. 

Symptoms contrary to the effect of this medication are: 

Agitation, extremely high body temperature, overactive reflexes, rigid muscles, vomiting 

If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
