Valium Dosage: What is the recommended amount?

The usual Valium dosage depending upon the severity of symptoms is between 2 mg. and 10 mg. taken two to four times daily.  

Acute alcohol withdrawal: Valium dosage 

The usual Valium dosage of this anti anxiety medicine is 10 mg, three or four times during the first 24 hours, and then 5 mg. three or four times daily as needed. 

Valium dosage for relief of muscle spasms: 

The usual dose of this anti anxiety medicine for relief of muscle spasms is 2 mg to 10 mg three or four times daily. 

Convulsive disorders:

The usual valium dosage for convulsive disorders is 2 milligrams to 10 mg two to four times daily. 

 

Children 

Valium should never be given to children under the age of six months of age. The usual Valium dosage to start children over six months old is 1 to 2.5 mg three or four times a day.  Your physician may increase the medication as needed. 

Older adults 

The usual starting dosage of this anti anxiety medicine is 2 mg to 2.5 mg once or twice a day, which your doctor will then increase as needed.  Your physician will usually limit the Valium dosage to the smallest effective amount possible as older people are more apt to become oversedated and subject to higher risk for falls and other difficulties associated with lack of coordination. 

Valium Overdosage 

Any medication including this anti anxiety medicine, if taken in excess of the prescribed dosage can be dangerous and ultimately have serious consequences.  If you suspect an overdose, you should seek medical attention immediately. 

Symptoms of Valium overdosage may include: 

Coma, confusion, diminished reflexes, sleepiness
