Erectile Dysfunction?

How does
Viagra work for erectile dysfunction?
Viagra
belongs to a group of medicines that actually delays the enzymes referred to as
phosphodiesterases from working too quickly. The penis is one of the areas of
the body in which these enzymes work. Viagra is used to treat men with erectile
dysfunction or what is frequently referred to as sexual impotence.
By
controlling this enzyme, Viagra helps maintain an erection that is produced when
the penis is stimulated. Without stimulation of the penis such as occurs during
sexual intercourse, erection will not occur or be maintained.
Has Viagra
ever been used for anything besides erectile dysfunction?
Viagra has
been used to treat the symptoms of pulmonary arterial hypertension. This is a
form of high blood pressure that occurs in the main artery that carries blood
from the right side of the heart (the ventricle) to the lungs. When the smaller
blood vessels become blocked somewhat or are resistant to blood flow, the right
ventricle has to work harder to pump enough blood through to the lungs. Viagra
helps by increasing the blood flow to the lungs and subsequently reducing the
burden or work load of the heart.
